If time permits enjoy a brief city tour of Nuwara Eliya.

In time for the train, proceed to Nanu Oya railway station and board in to the train and continue to Ella - A journey said regarded as one of the most scenic train journeys in the world with sceneries of rolling mountains and green valley’s. Destination: Galle Cinnamon & Toddy Experience

Later in the afternoon visit a local home garden with a planter to witness the sophisticated art of cinnamon peeling and taste a rare Sri Lankan delicacy.

Sri Lanka is the world’s largest producer of true cinnamon, and the south of Sri Lanka produces most of the islands harvest. Visit a local cinnamon estate with the planter to know more about the spice, how it’s grown, harvested, and peeled. Although the careful art of peeling cinnamon requires some practice, the planter would teach his techniques to follow and learn. End this part of the experience with a cup of cinnamon infused tea.

The planter would then introduce you to diverse local vegetables, fruits, and flowers of his home garden. He would also showcase native uses of some plants such as making natural shampoo and toothbrushes!

After a short walk, we reach the Kithul grove where the planter will climb to the top of the tree to pick the sap that has been collecting for a few hours. This sweet delicacy is a rare treat to many locals as the availability Kithul toddy can be very limited. Taste this unprocessed plant-based drink with some local snacks sourced from the plantation.

Later this morning you will enjoy a traditional cooking session at a local house. Firstly, visit the local market with your host and gather the vegetables / spice and meats for a traditional Sri Lankan lunch. Get an introduction to some lesser known vegetables and a large range of Sri Lanka’s staple spices. Afterwards, you will take a short drive to the fish markets which border the ocean, Here, fishermen gather daily to sell their catch of the day. From the chaos of the markets you will then make your way to one of the most serene areas in Galle to begin cooking. The Paddy Island is a private property with an open-air dining area and kitchen set in the middle of several rice paddies. During the summer months, these paddies glow emerald green and the scenery is lush and dense with flowers and plants. The preparation and cooking of lunch is done in the outside kitchens by two village locals and the chefs. You will have the opportunity to scrape coconuts in the traditional manner, prepare the vegetables, and learn the secrets to making popular curries and side-dishes such as chicken curry, dahl, fish balls and coconut sambol. Once the cooking is finished a leisurely lunch is served in the dining area with panoramic views over the rice paddy. Lastly, you can lounge around and enjoy the views of the paddy island with its lotus pond, large variety of bird life and surr ounding rice fields too

Destination: Sri Lankan Wooden Mask Painting

Thereafter engage in wooden mask painting experience; Masks have been used in Sri Lanka for centuries, in the telling of local folklore to traditional dances. Discover their place in modern-day performance and ritual and their roots in holistic healing. Your host will explain the traditional techniques of carving and designs and the reasons behind them while teaching you to paint a pre-carved masks in a piece of light wood called kaduru. The end result is an eye-catching mask for you to take home and an in-depth insight into the role of masks in Sri Lankan culture.

Destination: Stilt Fishing

After breakfast check out from the hotel and proceed to Colombo.

En route stop to witness Stilt Fishing, one of the most interesting traditional fishing methods of Sri Lanka. This mode of fishing was more widely used all along the coast until the tsunami in 2004 which caused such activities to cease temporarily until recent years. The beautiful sight of fishermen perched branched poles as they fish skillfully during dawn, noon and dusk;

Though stilt fishermen make the activity seem easy and comfortable; stilt fishing requires much skill and balance. A vertical pole with an attached crossbar is embedded into the sea floor among the shallows, or on a riverbed. The crossbar allows the fishermen to be seated a couple of meters above the water causing minimal shadows on the water and hence little to no disturbance amongst the sea life. The stilt fishermen then use a rod from this precarious position to bring in a good catch of spotted herrings and small mackerels from the comparative shallows of the sea or from the river. They collect the catch in a bag tied to the pole or to their waist.

Once completed continue your drive to Colombo; the commercial and city center known as the “Fort”, built by the Portuguese in the 16th century where grand colonial era buildings stand alongside modern office structures. On arrival check in to the hotel.
