A lot of guests ask us whether India is safe for Solo Women travelers, so we thought of taking up this issue, and, started figuring out why this perception has grown over the years. First, we do need to realize that India is a huge country with a big population. India has a population of nearly 1.25 billion people (or more!!). Close to half of this number are women. A majority of them is stepping out of their homes to earn a living and contribute their might to the workforce - they are doing this with dignity and are receiving respect too. Whatever incidents related to women happen, needs to be viewed in the context of the sheer number of people living here. Besides, according to a United Nations report of 2012, one in every three women worldwide has experienced physical or sexual violence. So, “Crime against Women”, like many other social crimes, needs to be viewed in a global perspective, which we all need to fight together. Stereotyping a single nation will not help the cause - we need to prepare a strong composite action plan that will help us in combating these heinous social crimes committed against various strata of society.. Of Course, in India we have embarked to create tougher laws to protect the women’s rights. Also, the media as well as the intelligentsia are  generating mass awareness amongst the people on the matter of up keeping the woman’s dignity as well as rights. Consequently, women too are becoming more intolerant of any passes or crimes against them. There is a greater reporting and this indicates a break from tradition. By exercising their constitutional and legal options women in India are ensuring that they are not pushovers in the realizing of the great modern Indian dream of progress based on equality.

However, now the times are changing as we have also seen in recent times that the common people are standing up against these  intolerant crimes, and raising their voices in every possible manner - as we have seen in Nirbhaya case (happened in December 2012). We are sure that the time will come when we will all stand together to eradicate crimes, not only against women, but, crimes in general. Moreover, India is a very diverse and a different country with varied educational and cultural levels. For instance, many travelers go to Rajasthan, but that does not mean the desert state is westernized. Rajasthan is one of the most traditional states in India. Wearing a tank top and shorts might not appropriate in the back of beyond regions of this state and can invite unwanted attention. On the other hand, in certain parts of Mumbai, like Colaba and Bandra, wearing liberal attire is much more acceptable. We only suggest to all our travellers to be mindful of local sensibilities when conducting themselves publicly.
